MULBERRY is a fruit bearing tree that is easy to care of. The bark, roots, leaves and fruits are all edible and has a potential health benefits, but the leaves specially the dried ones were more used and highly priced from centuries ago. Chinese used the leaves to feed silkworms, but today, many use the leaves as dietary supplements and as a healthy tea.

There are 3 types of mulberry - red, white and black. They are named according to the color of the fruit.

Dried mulberry leaves

Mulberry leaves are used in traditional Asian medicine for its beneficial properties and have since been proven in many clinical trials. The leaves contain minerals and antioxidants, vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc. Traditionally, the root bark, leaves and fruits were used as treatment for fever, cough, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and hyperglycaemia(Chan et al.2016).

Scientific studies suggest that mulberry leaves contain a cluster of bioactive compounds and possess several pharmacological effects - Pharm Biol.2018

HEALTH BENEFITS:

* lowers blood sugar - PLoS One 2027 studies found that leaf extract may reduce blood glucose response after a carbohydrate-heavy meal.

* reduces bad cholesterol- 280grams of leaf powder taken 3times regularly for 3 months helps lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides: BioMed Research International published 2013

* anti inflammatory effects- mulberry contains flavonoid antioxidants and numerous anti-inflammatory compounds. 

* cold symptoms - the leaf is used to treat liver conditions. It treats headaches, cough, painful eyes, fever and sore throat.

* weight loss- mulberry tea prevents the absorption of carbohydrates due to the presence of miranoline(1-deoxynojirimycine). It helps the body to flush out carbohydrates and starches from the body so that it does not turn into glucose, hunger is reduced by reducing blood sugar levels- Health Benefits Times

* blood vessels health- the tea reduces the chance of artherosclerosis by lessening oxidisation of cholesterol in the blood vessels which is due to the presence of flavonoids and quercetin in the leaves.

* fights diabetes- the tea restricts the high amount of monosaccharide to enter into the circulation. Prevents type 2 diabetes by maintaining the control over blood sugar level.

*  anti cancer

* liver health

* good for skin

* effective against arthritis and fibrosis 

Caution: Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should stay on the safe side and avoid taking the tea, diabetics should watch signs of low blood sugar and monitor carefully. In some people the tea or eating the leaves may cause bloating, constipation, gas and loose stool. Be cautious in taking tea with your diabetes medications because it might cause your sugar to go too low. The sap from stems and bark may cause irritation to the skin to some. Discontinue taking the tea or eating the leaves if you experience rapid  pulse, breathing difficulties, wheezing and swelling and seek medical advice. 

I love to mix mulberry leaves on sautéed mongo, sardines, or Tinola. I love my Mulberry tea boiled with pandan leaves.  You can also wrap your fish with mulberry leaves when you cook ginataang tilapia.

WHO IS MASA INC

MASA Inc is a group of volunteers from all walks of life. Volunteers as young as 10 years old to a very strong and smart 76 years old happily sharing their precious time to help give these lights of hope to our IP communities in need. Without them, MASA inc wouldn't be this successful in so short a time.

We climbed mountains, walked long rough and rugged paths and terrain, battled the heat of the sun or the rain, struggled making a step on very sticky mud or slippery paths going up the site of the village.

We had crossed rivers and streams battling the cold and strong water current, traveled the most bumpy and rugged roads still with all smiles and a happy heart.

We slept on rugged and rocky floor of the tents that stood just few steps the river banks, bathed in rivers and ate with our bare hands together like one big happy family, a happy friendship that grew deep in our hearts from working together for the good of the community and our environment with thoughts that one day these solar lamps we share will produce better citizens, professionals, teachers, architects, engineers, IT experts or who knows a mayor or a president someday?

We had always been confident and sure our travel is safe and will always be on time with our Logistics Team leader, Lito Pastor on the wheels.

The life and heart of the solar native lamp is in the circuit. It had been innovated many times for upgrades and better performance by no other than the best Technical Team leader of the group, Myk Mica.

Sponsors and donors played the most important role in MASA Inc. It is not that easy to scout for one since we are not yet that famous or as other would say we are not yet branded like big NGOs or foundations. But we are not for branding, our aim is to help in any way we could, donations big and small when put together would already put a hope to any IP community. And who does better and more able in that field but no other than our Social and Marketing Team leader, Jeff Samuel Daquilanea.

In the solar world dominated by mostly men, we need woman shakers and movers to empower women and prove to all that women too can be solar advocates and engineers. We are glad to have our Women Empowerment Team Leader Ria San Gabriel.

Finances are not yet that easy flowing for MASA Inc. A lot of times funds would come from our own pockets to push through a project. We are really thankful and owe a lot of gratitude to Maria Dolores Fontanilla for helping us with finances.

Experiences from the past acquaintances made MASA Inc just even stronger and learned. With the help of our Sales Marketing Team leader Rob Tan, he helped and guided us with patenting our native solar lamp.

ILAW NG MASA(MASA Inc's NATIVE SOLAR LAMP)

ILAW NG MASA

MASA Inc designed a Native solar lamp using indigenous materials, recycled bottle and 

its circuit. Among the IP Communities that MASA Inc had visited, we felt the need to help the Dumagat Remontados of MAGATA Tribe to have another or extra source of income by teaching them to make these native solar lamps out the indigenous materials found in their community. Rattan, coconut shell and nito fern are abundant in the area and in the deep forest of Tanay.  

MASA Inc circuit is used to make the solar lighting work. These circuits are usually assembled in sponsored workshops by CSR's, schools and universities, cooperatives, government and private institutions. After assembly of the circuit, these are then connected to other parts in the lamp and the finished native solar lamp is donated to another IP community.

In this way, we had helped an IP community get extra source of livelihood, let CSR's and other institutions have awareness regarding renewable energy, share their extra resources to communities in need, help light up other IP communities and inspire and motivate every child or student who received the solar lamp to do their best in school since they have now their source of light at night to help light up their study nights. Who knows that with these lamps, we could inspire would be engineers, teachers, architects, IT experts and a mayor or president? Besides helping these IP communities have continuous source of light, we had helped them save 15 or more pesos a day for their gas consumption for a bottle of gas lamp. Gas lamps are hazardous to health and the environment.
